Tế Phong Festival
A sacred wind ceremony on the banks of the Hậu River
Introduction
The Tế Phong Festival is one of Can Tho's most time-honored ceremonial traditions, rooted in the spiritual life of the Mekong Delta's riverine communities. The name "Tế Phong" translates to "wind offering," a solemn rite in which residents pray for favorable winds, calm waters, bountiful harvests, and the safe passage of boats along the Hậu River.
This festival provides an occasion for the riverside community to express gratitude toward the natural forces that govern their livelihoods, while preserving spiritual and cultural traditions passed down through generations.
Origins and Significance
The Tế Phong Festival originated from the nature-worshipping beliefs of the Mekong Delta's waterway communities. Life in the western provinces revolves around rivers and canals, with daily activities closely tied to weather patterns and tidal cycles. The wind ceremony therefore carries profound importance:

Floating Lanterns
Following the formal offerings, participants release hundreds of flower lanterns onto the Hậu River. The lanterns drift gently downstream, their flickering lights creating a scene that is at once solemn and deeply poetic.
Cultural Performances
The festival also features traditional cultural activities, including đờn ca tài tử (southern folk music), hát bội (classical opera), and folk games on the river, lending the occasion an atmosphere of both reverence and celebration.
